  <title>Sydney FC 0 - NZ Knights 1</title>
  <link>http://archive.sfcu.com.au/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=107</link>
<description>All good things must come to an end, they say. But the timing could not have been worse on this occasion.

The resurgent New Zealand Knights were the unlikely bunch responsible for curtailing Sydney FC’s nine-game unbeaten run, in a frustrating match for the home fans at Aussie Stadium. Notching an early goal from a corner, the Knights defended intelligently and in numbers thereafter to deny Terry Butcher’s men.

Robbie Middleby’s thigh strain meant a first start of the season for Jacob Timpano, and a tactical reshuffle. Ruben Zadkovich, bizarrely, moved from right-back to left midfield, while Iain Fyfe returned to the right side of defence.

  <title>Newcastle Jets 0 - Sydney FC 2</title>
  <link>http://archive.sfcu.com.au/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=106</link>
<description>Two goals that bookended the second half gave Sydney FC its first ever victory over Newcastle in the A-League. Better still, Terry Butcher’s side have maintained their second place, despite the three-point penalty handed down during the week.

Atrocious pitch conditions meant that both sides were unable to play to their full potential, but in the final analysis, Sydney FC adapted better.

Mark Rudan’s suspension might have meant a return to the first eleven for Jacob Timpano, but Butcher instead opted to shift Iain Fyfe into central defence, allowing Ruben Zadkovich to occupy the right-back role. Otherwise, it was an unchanged Sydney eleven.

  <title>Sydney FC 1 - Perth Glory 0</title>

  <description>Off The Mark

Alex Brosque&#039;s first goal for Sydney FC could not have arrived at a better time. It provided Terry Butcher&#039;s men with their first victory (and first goal) in three games; the fact that Sydney had to play over an hour with a man less made the win all the sweeter.

There was only one change to the Sydney FC side that had snatched a draw in Melbourne; Alex Brosque became the latest to be used in the lone striker role by Butcher, with David Zdrilic and Saso Petrovski relegated to the bench. For Perth, Stan Lazaridis made an appearance after being &quot;rested&quot; for the Glory&#039;s previous match, in Gosford. Yet the former Socceroo would not last the distance.

  <description>surprise inclusion

A staggering crowd of 50,333 witnessed a tight struggle between the A-League’s top two sides on Friday night.

Sadly, the spectators were denied a goal. Happily, from a Sydney FC point of view, Terry Butcher’s side maintained their unbeaten run, and notched their third clean sheet in succession.

Butcher again resisted the temptation to tinker. The only change to the side that had gained a point in Gosford was made up front, where the recalcitrant Saso Petrovski was preferred to David Zdrilic.

  <description>surprise inclusion

A feisty derby game, which produced far more heat than light, finished scoreless at Bluetongue Stadium.

The now traditional sing-off in the Kendall Bar featured the usual mix of scatological wit and good-natured reminders of past triumphs and tragedies. The Cove&#039;s boast that they, unlike the Marinators, would soon be experiencing the delights of Asia drew a predictably graphic retort from the Marinators, concerning the health risks associated with Asian travel.

Terry Butcher fielded an unchanged side; Saso Petrovski&#039;s ill-advised criticism of his coach&#039;s tactics ensured further bench splinters for the big man.

  <title>Sydney FC 3 - Queensland Roar 0</title>

  <description>Miles a-head!

Sydney FC cruised to its third successive win in comfortable style last night at Aussie Stadium. It’s a pity that so few Sydneysiders turned out to see it.

Terry Butcher fielded an unchanged eleven, clearly pleased with the way his system had worked against Adelaide. Frank Farina replaced the out-of-sorts Dario Vidosic with his new signing Damian Mori; Queensland therefore started with Mori, Ante Milicic and Reinaldo up front. It seemed a poorly-matched strike combination, and it proved to be such.

  <description>Big Blue Man

Clashes between Sydney FC and Adelaide United are always chock-full of interest and incident. This afternoon’s game was no exception.

Sydney, who started slowly, won thanks to an excellent first-half performance and a determined defensive effort in the second period.

Terry Butcher was, for once, spoiled for choice; Steve Corica, Mark Milligan and Terry McFlynn were available once again, and all three went straight into the first eleven; Milligan joined Mark Rudan in central defence, displacing Nikolai Topor-Stanley, while McFlynn and Corica joined a five-man midfield, in which Corica occupied the advanced role. David Carney, too, returned to the starting eleven…on the right-hand side.

  <description>Super Dave Returns

There was much to be happy about on Friday night. A first win in six, four goals scored at Aussie Stadium by the home side (a Sydney FC first), and, last but not least, the long-awaited return of the Cove’s favourite son – David Carney.

Terry Butcher was able to call upon club captain Mark Rudan once more; he replaced the suspended Matthew Bingley in defence, in the only change to the side that had drawn with Newcastle. Saso Petrovski again began just behind the forward line, leaving David Zdrilic to plough a lone furrow up front.

  <description>Zdrila Scores!

A pleasing first half from Terry Butcher’s team was followed by a second half in which they faded badly. However, all things considered, a point from a game that boded so badly for Sydney FC is not to be sneezed at.

Terry Butcher had altered the formation somewhat. Saso Petrovski became the latest player to occupy the “three-quarter” role in midfield, with Alex Brosque pushed out to the left. Robbie Middleby accordingly switched wings, and Ruben Zadkovich joined Ufuk Talay in the midfield engine-room. Matthew Bingley, having extended his short-term contract, took the place of the suspended Mark Rudan in defence.

  <description>Zdrila Scores!

Another dispiriting afternoon at Aussie Stadium. For the fourth game in succession, Sydney FC could not capitalize on a bright start and an early lead.

The lamentable absence of Steve Corica and Mark Milligan compelled Terry Butcher to alter his line-up yet again. Robbie Middleby made a welcome return from injury, starting on the left as Alex Brosque moved into the middle. Ufuk Talay assumed the anchor role in midfield, while David Zdrilic returned to the first eleven, partnering Petrovski up front.
